Azadi March Update: Fazlur is unable to keep the opposition together

As the Azadi march led by JUI-F is likely to complete the first week of its sit-in, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the JUI is finding it difficult to take along the opposition.

Neither the PPP nor the PML-N, the two major opposition parties have agreed to take part in the sit-in. Even the smaller regional parties - National Party (NP) and Awami National Party (ANP) are keen to end the sit-in and change the strategy.

Without the two major opposition parties, the Azadi march and the follow-up sit-in is likely to fizzle out, unless Fazlur Rehman changes the strategy.

Dawn's editorial calls for an early exit by Fazlur Rehman

Dawn, one of the leading English daily, has advised in its editorial, that everyone who has a stake in democratic Pakistan "must help the maulana and his party find an honourable route back home." It considers the demand by JUI-F's demand (resignation of Imran Khan) is "too unrealistic to deserve serious consideration."

The editorial also says: "It is not only JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman who should be looking for an early exit from the current difficult situation. Opposition parties, the government, and indeed the country as a whole, must quickly emerge from this cloud of uncertainty that threatens to affect proceedings in many important areas."
