On 14 December, the polio workers at the Torkham border urged the authorities to accept their demands and went on a strike, preventing the Afghan children from being vaccinated. A total of 84 workers, including 12 female workers, who have been stationed at the Tirkham crossing have been tasked with vaccinating Afghan children against Polio before their entry into Pakistan. The workers have demanded a daily stipend of PKR 1000, four days of leave every month and timely payment of their monthly salaries. Furthermore, the workers have demanded appropriate facilities for those working at night shifts on the border.
The health workers complained about the late payment of salary and the unfair working conditions where they were forced to work the day and night shifts without a break in the week. The protestors have announced their decision to continue the strike until the fulfilment of the demands by the authorities.("Polio workers go on strike at Torkham border" Dawn, 15 December 2022)
