FATF will review Pakistan’s performance in June
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global watchdog based in Paris, will review Pakistan’s measures to counter terror financing and money laundering at its upcoming June 21-26 joint working group meeting to be held in Beijing. In February FATF has allowed four months to Pakistan to complete the global commitments and standards in the unfulfilled 13 targets. In October FATF will announce its verdict regarding whether or not Pakistan would continue in the grey-list. The novel pandemic is being blamed for detrimentally affecting the country’s efforts in this respect. (Dawn, 7 April 2020)

Coronavirus: Debt relief and restructuring efforts on the rise
A meeting on Covid-19’s economic impact, chaired by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and attended by Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar, Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar and SAPM on Finance Hafeez Sheikh was convened at the Foreign Office. They said the pandemic has been straining the economy through crisis management expenses (Rs1.13tr relief package), export reduction, lower remittances and dwindling activities in industrial, sectoral and agricultural production. Qureshi, while attempting a widespread diplomatic effort for debt relief and restructuring, hopes for Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) support. Presently, Pakistan’s external debt is $107 billion, approximately. (Dawn, 7 April 2020)

Coronavirus: Chief Justice accuses Centre and Provinces of Complacence
On 6 April, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmed urged coordination amongst the federal government and stakeholders in fighting the pandemic and expressed doubt regarding the Centre’s preparedness in tackling the virus, while hearing a petition against the IHC granted bail of 408 Adiala Jail prisoners considering the pandemic. The Supreme Court also directed quarantine facilities to be established in Chaman, Taftan and Torkham border crossings for more effective health screening of individuals. The CJP also accused the Centre of simply ordering issues without making any advancements on the ground. (The News International, 7 April 2020)
