Centre, Sindh disagree over full-fledged lockdown
The National Coordination Committee will meet on 14 April to address the political divide between the federal government and Sindh’s government regarding the handling of the pandemic and the degree of lockdown and social distancing. The Centre wants to resume economic activities by relaxing restrictions across the state for sectors including pharmaceuticals, food and construction. Meanwhile, federal minister Sarwar Khan warned that with 70,000 tests the death rate could reach 700 by 25 April. (The News International, 11 April 2020) 
 
Sindh lashes out at Centre over Lack of testing kits
On 10 April, Sindh government blamed the Centre of being a hindrance to the import of COVID-19 testing kits. PPP Sentaor Sherry Rahman said the Centre must be proactive in tackling the virus and not merely make announcements. She also emphasised the need for swift and coordinated responses. The severe shortage of kits has forced Sindh to decide to import kits from China and United Kingdom. But the Centre has given a ‘lukewarm’ response. (The Express Tribune, 10 April 2020)

Over 200,000 tons of sugar underreported by 13 mills
During the present sugarcane crushing season, by falsely reporting the sugar recovery, over 200,000 tons of sugar was underreported by thirteen mills in Punjab. The Inquiry Commission’s Punjab cane commissioner reported that the mills reported 1.09 to 2.65 per cent lower sucrose recovery. The excess was sold to undocumented sectors in Central Asia and Afghanistan. (The News International, 11 April 2020) 
 
Waziristan: 7 militants killed; two soldiers killed
On 10 April, during a clash in the Zakakhel town of North Waziristan’s Mir Ali tehsil, two soldiers and seven militants were killed and four others sustained injuries. Also, in Mir Ali tehsil, a security forces check post was attacked with explosives. However, fatalities were not reported. (The News International, 11 April 2020) 
 
Balochistan: Two soldiers killed, two more injured in blast
A bomb blast in Qila Abdullah’s Toba Achakzai area killed two Pakistani Army soldiers and injured two more, on 10 April. The improvised explosive device went off near a security forces’ vehicle killing the two soldiers on the spot. Later, the bodies were shifted to Quetta. (Dawn, 11 April 2020) 
 
ECONOMY
Six per cent Growth in remittances, despite global slump
Despite the pandemic led layoffs and salary cuts of overseas Pakistani nationals, a six per cent growth was recorded in the remittances during the third quarter of FY20. State Bank of Pakistan reported on 10 April that Pakistan received $16.991bn in remittances during 9MFY20 compared to $16bn during the corresponding period of FY19. Once again, Saudi Arabia is the single most important point for inflow of remittances with $3.925bn in 9MFY20, recording a 4.7 per cent growth from the same period of the previous year.
