COVID-19
Economic effects: Loss in GDP growth estimated to 0.8 to 1.3pc
Pakistan’s Planning Commission has estimated a 0.8 to 1.3 per cent loss in GDP growth and is looking forward to crafting a socio-economic action plan to mitigate negative impacts after consulting with the World Bank. As per new projections, the GDP would stand at 2-2.5 per cent for FY20. The sectors of agriculture, services, manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade would be negatively impacted until October 2020. (The News International, 10 April 2020)

EXTERNAL
Pakistan summons Afghan envoy; seeks custody of IS fighter
On 9 April, the Foreign Office asked Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan for the immediate hand over of Aslam Farooqi, an Islamic State of the Khorasan Province leader, for further investigation regarding his involvement in anti-Pakistan efforts in Afghanistan. Previously, Kabul had announced the arrest of Aslam and twenty other ISKP commanders. National Directorate of Security (NDS), the Afghan intelligence agency, stated the arrest was following ISKP claiming responsibility for the 8 April attack on a Sikh religious complex that killed 25 people. (The News International, 10 April 2020)

Indian drone shot down by Pakistan
The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the drone intruded 600 meters inside Pakistan’s territory in Sankh Sector. Pakistan Army spokesperson Director General Major General Babar blamed India for constantly disregarding the Ceasefire Understanding of 2003. (The News International, 10 April 2020)

INTERNAL
Sindh CM wants all four provinces to extend lockdown
Amid calls for resuming economic activity by the federal government, on 10 April, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the province-wide lockdown must be extended by a week after 14 April. He urged province-wide unified steps to tackle the virus. Sindh had imposed a two-week lockdown on March 23, owing to the peaking of Covid-19 cases in the province. Later the Centre extended it till April 14. (The News International, 10 April 2020)

Opposition blames Centre for creation of ‘Tiger Force’
During a Parliamentary Committee meeting on Covid-19 on 9 April, the opposition slammed the Centre for establishing the ‘Tiger Force’ and handing over key profiles to non-elected persons; they pointed out that Adviser to PM on Commerce Abdul Razzak Dawood, Adviser to the PM on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, SAPM on Health Dr Zafar Mirza and NDMA head Lt Gen Mohammad Afzal were all non-elected persons. PML-N said technocrats must not be entrusted with policy formulation. (Dawn, 10 April 2020)
